Website Tips: Keep it Clean and Simple

CDHS6152.jpg

As a new business owner, you have many issues to consider and you may be wondering what to tackle first. One of your top priorities should be to make sure you have a website, and that it’s in great shape. It is the first place people will look to find out more about you and your business. If they like what they see, they will keep coming back to you.

Creating a website from scratch can be overwhelming, and it’s likely you will need some help from an expert in this area. If you choose to work with a graphic designer, you should expect her to not only provide great design skill but also advice for creating a structure and strategy for your website content. Your website should have a consistent look and style throughout, and a focus on the user experience and ease of use.

The best websites follow these simple rules:

AVOID CLUTTER

- Keep homepage minimalistic with plenty of white space
- Tone down the word count; users only scan pages and gravitate to keywords most
- Use Calls to Action to ensure user engagement
- Break up text with larger subheadings
- Include images or icons to communicate ideas without words

CAPTURE ATTENTION

- Arrange content in a logical manner
- Communicate your main ideas immediately and in few words (users linger only for a few seconds)
- Establish a clear hierarchy of your information by using color, contrast, sizing and spacing between blocks of content
- Let users follow the hints you left for them

MAKE IT READABLE

- Readability measures how easy it is for people to recognize words, sentences and phrases
- If it is high, your potential clients will be able to efficiently scan your site
- For strong website readability, follow these rules:

USE CONTRAST

- Ensure good contrast between your text and its background (so text is clearly visible)
- Prominently feature your main 1-2 branding colors throughout your website
- Play with hints of colors in your palette without sacrificing readability

Choose fonts carefully

- Avoid fonts that are hard to read, like tiny fonts or all caps
- Keep body text at least 14-18 pt.
- Opt for Sans Serif fonts (e.g., Helvetica), the best choice for online text
- Use Script Fonts (handlettering) only in headers, not paragraphs
- Don't use more than 3 different typefaces

 CREATE EASY NAVIGATION

- Keep it simple
- Remember users are easily frustrated
- Use solid navigation to help search engines index your website content (and enhance user experience)

INSIDER TIPS:

- Link your logo to your homepage
- Place navigation menu at top of your web page and rank menu items by importance
- If your design is more of a long-scrolling style, add anchor menus that bring users back to the top or bottom of the page, or directly to any section of the website
- Add a footer with all your important links (e.g., shortened version of your menu, social media icons, additional important links like terms of use, FAQs, contact, blog, etc.)

BE MOBILE-FRIENDLY

- Don't forget:  Most of your visitors are probably on their phones or tablets
- Make sure to continually update your mobile-friendly site
- Consider using Squarespace as your platform, which includes a mobile-friendly version
